Just Not Tonight

There she sits, a country entirely on her own.

A voice inside whispers: Go ask for her phone.

But the old walls rise up,

heavy and tight—

No, I can’t do it. Just not tonight.

She is too sweet for the scars that I wear,

Too bright for the shadow I bring to the chair.

She must be waiting for someone, I think—

So back to the borders I quietly shrink.

I turn from the table, I step from the floor,

Leaving tomorrow to guard the front door.

But days turn to months, and the months into years,

Until loneliness hardens and swallows the fears.

And the old ceiling questions circle the dark:

How does a stone ever find a bright spark?

For I cannot see through the ghost of my history,

Why anyone like her would want someone like me?

God’s Little Pilots

They flutter through the branches, they sail upon the breeze,

God’s little pilots riding through the green canopy of trees.

Floating through the quiet air, they bring a welcome grace,

A quick and lovely pause within a busy, restless space.

I gaze out from the window at the feeders hanging high,

Restocked with seeds to greet the wings that travel through the sky.

From subtle wrens to brilliant jays, they gather in a crowd,

A flurry of soft feathers where the morning sings aloud.

The mourning doves sit heavy, while the woodpeckers take part,

Each sudden flash of color bringing comfort to my heart.

Yet of all the gentle creatures that grace my fleeting view,

The goldfinch is the beacon that shines the morning through.

With bright and yellow bodies catching sunlight as they run,

They leave a simple whisper that life is meant for fun.

Dominion

No supervisor measures out my worth;

her cold appraisal is a private shade.

I hold the value carried since my birth,

unmoved by petty metrics she has made.

I am far more than titles, desk, or wage;

this labor takes far more than it can give.

No hurried ledger binds me to the page;

I set the quiet terms on how I live.

If she should deem my efforts incomplete,

that weight belongs to her, and not to me.

Her fractured faith is where her shadows meet;

I walk the daylight, confident and free.

I chart the course across the open sea,

where neither spite nor malice holds the knife:

The architect of my own dignity,

I hold the sole dominion of my life.

A Gothic Beauty

Her eyes ignite the quiet, shadow realm,

A bright and shining star against the night;

Though dark adornments seek to overwhelm,

Her inner radiance turns the darkness bright.

Her sultry gaze captures a restless heart,

She glides with grace through shadows soft and deep;

A mysterious grace where quiet visions start,

And secrets that the gentle night will keep.

Her tempting lips, in crimson or in black,

Are framed by winged eyeliner, sharp and fine;

A subtle spell that draws the spirit back,

To seek the beauty in her dark design.

Though lingering shadows mark her chosen place,

The morning light reveals her gentle grace.
