Connection & Healing

The Captain of the Mind

My past remains behind me; it holds no final claim,

I chart the open water, the master of my fate.

Yet kindness is the compass that guides my quiet heart—

I have no room for venom, no need or use to hate.

I write the living chapter with steady hand and pen,

Though other ships will cross me and winds may try their will;

I do not drift in silence, a passive passenger,

Nor let a passing shadow command the course I fill.

With loving care I anchor, with stoic mind I steer,

Unbowed by heavy weather, unmoved by what was said.

No struggle in this journey shall ever keep me down;

I will be quiet when I’m dead.

Connection & Healing

The Unhurried Room

A sonnet on the joys of being “analog.”

We lay the glowing glass upon the pine,

And turn the fevered pulse of circuits low,

To leave the frantic stream of the design,

And let the simple room begin to glow.

Across the wooden board no borders stand;

The light falls warm upon an open face.

No hurried prompt commands a shifting hand,

Nor measures out our minutes in this space.

Yet when the constant hum at last is still,

The quiet breath reveals an ancient ground,

Where eyes can meet and listen at their will,

And words return to their authentic sound.

We drop the hurried armor from our chest:

To sit, unmasked, and simply be at rest.

The Architecture of the Woods

I step off the gravel path, leaving the daylight noise behind,

Slipping into a cathedral built of bark and quiet mind.

Here, the shadows do not crowd; they do not question or evaluate,

The heavy canopy just rests, an ancient, unblinking gate.

And then she stands before me, weathered, magnificent, and high,

A single monument of timber reaching out to claim the sky.

She does not ask for titles, nor the metrics of the day,

She only beckons with her branches, clearing winter walls away.

To stand beneath her quiet weight is to drop my heavy coat,

To find a sanctuary waiting in a world that time forgot.

No need to prove a history, no need to guard the floor,

Just a solitary traveler welcomed at the forest door.

The Sentinel

It stood as a sentinel

Guarding the backyard.

It never demanded recognition

But always received admiration.

The rock, more like a boulder,

Stood at the corner of our house.

Offering refuge and comfort.

It did not judge,

it was not critical.

A safe haven

for all who sat and climbed on it.

It could accommodate all kids,

And cats, and even a dog.

And it did not complain.

Summers were spent

Lying on the rock

Beneath the limbs of its neighbor tree.

I would lie on the rock and daydream

In the sun with the cool breezes of a Michigan summer

Blowing over me.

King of the rock was a game would play.

The rock never demanded attention, or proclaim its existence.

It simply was.

A product of the world

Neither made or shaped by man.

Silent in its being

But providing comfort in its permanence

I could always depend on the rock being there.

A sanctuary of my childhood.

A fortress from the world.

The Quiet Ones

Legend tells us the strong wield sword and steel,

rescuing the damsel to sit atop the hill.

Society tells us the strong are full of might,

imposing their will to win the loudest fight.

But history tells us the quiet ones hold the strength.

They conquer every battle without help or aid.

They slay the demons of a heavy past,

vanquishing monsters you never knew.

They endure without boasting of hidden conquests,

without recognition or parade.

The only proof of our strength

is that we are sitting

right here.
